:- from Lara Lee -- VINE VOICE : Eliza shines here vs My Fair Lady ( 5.0 out of 5 stars )
- 3.0 out of 5 stars from fra7299 -- Some charm, but I think it is slightly dated. : George Bernard Shaw’s Pygmalion, a social commentary and comedy about the transformation of a poor flower girl (Liza Doolittle) has been presented on stage and screen in various ways since its first publication. The title is in reference to the Greek legend of Pygmalion, a sculptor who literally fell in love with his creation. In Shaw’s play, it is Henry Higgins, a professor in phonetics, who tries to literally sculp Liza into the proper lady. ( Reviewed in the United States on November 24, 2020 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Reinold F. -- Could be love, could be need and craving. (AmazonClassics edition) : As an sculptor Higgins works the language and social skills of Eliza, a humble flower girl donned with innate talents. Amazing as Higgins is as a professional he is quite flawed as a social or romantic man. This social clumsiness is bittersweet as makes quite funny parts in the story, but sadly means too that he is not aware of his mistreatment towards his master work. There are no learned lessons: this play, as life, simply happens. ( Reviewed in the United States on November 19, 2019 )
- 4.0 out of 5 stars from Kindle Customer -- Finally read it. : Reading the boo, is very like listening to the film 'My fair lady's unfold. The dialogue and the stage direction unveils the story of Eliza Doolittle and Henry Higgins, she a flower girl, he a professor language phonetics. I was surprised how unlike the film, i ended up feeling sorry for Prof Higgins. He clearly thought a lot of Eliza, had grown accustomed to her but couldn't bring himself to submit to the restrictions of marriage. Reading the story of what happened after the play was as interesting and surprising. Great read ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 7, 2020 )
- 1.0 out of 5 stars from Seán -- This is a fake : This is not the text as written by Shaw but a fake that seems to have been back translated by a machine from a foreign language. Amazon should be ashamed of themselves for selling rubbish like this. Anybody who bought this in good faith should automatically be entitled to a refund. - 1.0 out of 5 stars from JP -- The book is a classic, but this publication has not been checked by anyone who cares about quality : This book is a poor translation by a person who is not a first-language English speaker. Or they used voice dictation software and did not check the results, but it was atrocious. The cut and paste errors didn't take much finding. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 15, 2019 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Richard Mwangi -- Two Fingers Up The Establishment : A friend recommended that I read George Bernard Shaw since I am in the habit of quoting Shaw and possess a rabid disgust of hypocritical respectability and class conscious pigs. This is simply the best play I have ever read and thoroughly recommend it to bohemians, non conformists, phonetics professors, artists, scientists and all those with a virulent loathing of pretentiousness. - 2.0 out of 5 stars from Anne Duff -- 3 stars : I bought this as I'd decided I wanted to read the original "My Fair Lady" but, gosh, I was disappointed. Professor Higgins is a foul-mouthed, bullying misogynist but I do realise that this is a story of of its time. I guess that, at least, I can say I've read it!
